- Cutters are available in 3 different materials, tungsten carbide (tc), high speed steel (hss), and the titanium nitride (tin) coated excelsior line. The titanium nitride coated excelsior tips offer the same characteristics as plain hss, but with the added toughness (has an rc of 90) and prolonged edge life that tin provides. An indispensable addition to the turner’s tool kit, double-ended calipers are ideal for both measuring vessel wall thicknesses and checking turning diameters. Using calipers while turning will increase the accuracy of measurement readings and transfers and speed the turning process.
